May the Lord bless you, and keep you

These are words that Moses gave to the people so that the people would recognize before the Lord that God’s blessings were great for them.

But first the people of Israel had to surrender before the Lord, make renewed covenants before Him. Let us remember that the same people sometimes acted of their own decision, but their punishment followed their disobedience. That is why Moses spoke to them about all these things and about God’s plans, so that all the people would submit to God’s laws.

In the following biblical passage, we will see Moses speaking words of wisdom about what the people should do before the Lord:

In that I command thee this day to love the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his judgments, that thou mayest live and multiply: and the Lord thy God shall bless thee in the land whither thou goest to possess it.

Deuteronomy 30:16 (KJV)

Moses clearly tells the people to love God, to keep His commandments, to do everything the Lord had set before them by law, in short, not to disobey God’s word. And the reward of doing this is that they would receive life and be blessed.

Could we take this teaching for ourselves? I would say yes. If we walk in the perfect ways of our God, and we always obey Him, then He will bless and help us. But beware, this does not mean that we will be good people just to enjoy the good things that our God has for us. Let us recall some words of Job: “Will we receive good from God, and will we not receive evil?”

So let’s try to walk righteously before our God and we will enjoy His blessings, His care, and His protection. Difficult times will come from time to time, but He will be our rock that will hold us up and help us endure and not faint.
