What is love? When we look up this definition in dictionaries, we often find descriptions such as having certain feelings for a person. Many people also define it as acts of giving to the needy or sacrificing for others. But, we must ask ourselves, what does the Bible tell us about love? Through the following biblical verses, we will discover something very interesting about the importance of love.
The apostle Paul wrote:
2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.
1 Corinthians 13:2-3
Paul dedicates the entire chapter of 1 Corinthians 13 to discussing the importance of love. The Corinthians were a church greatly blessed with spiritual gifts, but at the same time, they were immature in many ways. The apostle had to remind them of what is most important. Beloved brothers and sisters, what is the use of speaking all the languages of the world if we do not have love? The word “love” will always stand out in our Christian faith and holds the greatest importance.
Love is not what people often think it is. Love goes deeper, and I would argue that the word “love” itself does not even have an exhaustive definition, as John defines it simply: “God is love.”
The Father performed the greatest act of love by giving His Son on the cross of Calvary for each of us, for our rescue, for our salvation, thus giving up what He loved the most.
Love goes beyond giving to the poor or sacrificing our bodies. Loving is much more than that, and God shows us the true meaning of love every day. He loves us no matter how bad we have been, and He is always there with His arms of love open for each of us.
