The people of Israel were always under the care of the Lord. Wherever they went, they had God’s support.
At the time, Moses was 120 years old, and the Bible says he designated Joshua to continue God’s mission and purpose.
In Deuteronomy chapter 31, Moses speaks to all of Israel. The Lord had told Moses that he would not cross the Jordan River, but Joshua, whom God had prepared under Moses’ guidance, would lead the people to the Promised Land. All the nations opposing God and Israel would be delivered into Joshua’s hands.
Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the Lord thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.
Deuteronomy 31:6
This is the promise God made to Joshua as he was to lead the people of Israel. Together with the people, Joshua would fight the battles necessary to claim those lands.
God encouraged Joshua to be brave, to strive, and not to fear, for God Himself was with him.
God is the One who goes with us. We need not fear anything, for He does not abandon us. He does not let us fight alone. God will always go before us, just as He did with Joshua, because Joshua trusted in the Lord.
